Photobucket http://s961.photobucket.com/ Photobucket provides an immense supply of pictures to choose from for any occasion. It is equipped with a search engine to find specific photos, and gives user ability to upload their own photos and create a library. In an educational setting, educators could easily use these photos in a lesson, whether they are adding them to worksheets or presentations. Personally, I feel this software surpasses Google Images as it doesn’t require users to download the photo they choose. The fact that users can instead store all their photos on their Photobucket library is a huge plus for anyone who doesn't feel like carrying their device around with them. I definitely approve of this software.
Barnes and Noble Nook App http://nook.barnesandnoble.com/u/nook-mobile-app/379003593
This app version of BArnes and Nobles “Nook” reading device is free to download, and provides users with 2 free Ebooks upon sign up. although users will have to pay for books after that, this software allows for users to carry around they favorite books in a lightweight device, as well as listen to audio recordings of books. I think this would a great option for educators (if each students is provided with a device), as students can have access to a large amount of books they may have not normally been to get their hands on, as the well as the ability to highlight, mark, and save pages at their leisure without damaging a book. I find this software to be essential in the turning age of technology; the fact that we can now take our favorite newspapers, magazines, and books wherever we go is an amazing and useful thing.
Calibre http://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows To supplement the eBook software, Calibre is a free downloadable software that organizes all of your eBooks by author, genre, title, or whichever you choose. Users have the ability to tag their books to group them under specific subjects or projects, as well buying books through your chosen resource (Kindle, Nook, etc). For educators, this software would be great to organize all lesson supplements, self-help teaching guides, or even personal books. Calibre would also be great for a busy teacher who has multiple classes; just organize by subject in the tags, and your library is good to go. I think this software is a great option for anyone who has a large amount of books stored on their kindle. I would definitely recommend this for teacher usage, as students may not have this large amount of books on their own reading device.
Google Hangouts https://hangouts.google.com/ This free software gives users the ability to make group conference via video or audio, as well as having a chat box open for each user to submit their text into for the entire group to see. Users will need a Google Account first, but the systems within Google Hangouts make it worth the account. Up to nine members can join a group call at once, and no download is needed; it works right in your browser. The user will send an invite to “hangout”, and each group member must approve to join the conversation. As an educator, I think this software would be great for group presentations, as well as conferencing between teachers and possibly even parents. The main word that comes to mind when I see this software is collaboration. I personally find this software to surpass Skype, in that it provides a conveniently located textbox as well as a professional appearance.
1) Trelby • http://www.trelby.org/ • What if Does: Allows people to screen write and helps keep track of characters, compares scripts, exports and converts to PDF • Use in Education: Would be great for a Drama class or creative writing course. • Opinion: This would be a good tool especially since it is free for students to help them write their first screen play, etc.
2) Blender • www.blender.org • What is Does: Is a 3D creation suite. Support modeling, rigging, animation, simulation, rendering, composition and motion tracking, video editing and game creation. • Use in Education: Could be a useful tool in game design courses especially since it is free. It also be useful in criminal justice or forensic courses as simulation can be made. • Opinion: Looks like a neat tool for High School and College age students.
3) Google Keep • chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/google-keep-notes-and-lis/hmjkmjkepdijhoojdojkdfohbdgmmhki • What it Does: Allows for users to keep track of what is on their mind through photos, notes, lists and recording memos that can later be transcribes. Easily shared with others. Works on phone, tablets, computer and android wearable. • Use in Education: This would be a neat tool to use on class fieldtrips for students to keep track of finding answers to questions, tracking thoughts and things learned while there. Could also be used for students working together on a project to share ideas and thoughts. • Opinion: Seems very user friendly and something all ages can use as long as they have access to cells, tablets or a computer.
4) MediaMonkey • http://www.mediamonkey.com/ • What it Does: Allows users to manage any audio/video genres, record CDs, and download music, movies, audio books and podcasts. • Use in Education: This would be a good tool for music classes or for a way for students to gain access to audio books. • Opinion: I can see this being used for a student to listen to a book that may have great reading comprehension but poor reading fluency skills.
12. Prezi - https://prezi.com/ -free presentation tool. -This could be used instead of PowerPoint because it is free. It could be used to give presentations and teach lessons. I like this software and think it is a great alternative to PowerPoint.
13. Paint.net- http://www.getpaint.net/index.html -free replacement for Photoshop. Not as in depth. -This could be used for presentations and projects. I would probably use this in my classroom because it is free and easy to use, however, I like gimp better.
14. Evernote- https://evernote.com/ -write notes that stay forever and find them later, free, note-taker -This could be used to take notes instead of handwriting them. I like this software and would definitely use it in my classroom for students to take notes.
15. Lightworks- https://www.lwks.com/ -free, then pay. Video editing. -This could be used for projects. It could also be used for teachers to create videos to show the students. I liked this software, however, if you want more space you do have to pay.
1. Wiki Spaces- http://www.wikispaces.com/ Wiki Spaces is a free educational writing platform. It is a place you can go to communicate with other students in your class or with your teacher. This website would be useful in the classroom if you want your students to post discussions outside of class. I have used Wiki spaces in a class before and thought it worked very well, I enjoyed using it.
2. Photobucket- http://s147.photobucket.com/ Photobucket is free software that you are able to upload and store photos on. Also it allows you to search photos and save them to your account. This software would be useful in the classroom if you want your students to search photos for a presentation. I personally really like photo bucket because all of your photos are in one place. I would defiantly use this software with my future class, especially since it is free.
3. Weebly- http://www.weebly.com/ Weebly is a free place that you can use to create a free website. Also weebly allows you to create blogs or online store that are very easy to use. In a classroom weebly would be useful if you wanted your students to create a website to store all of their assignments. I really like weebly because it is easy to navigate and would be simple to explain to your students.
4. Oovoo- http://www.oovoo.com/ Oovoo allows you to video call up to 12 people at one time. Also it allows you to send text, picture, and video messages to people. This would be create for the classroom if you wanted your students to talk to their classmates to complete an assignment. Also as the teacher you could video call a group of students to complete a group assignment from home. I like oovoo because you can video call more than one person at a time and it would be very helpful for group projects if students couldn’t meet in person.
1.Jahshaka: http://www.jahshaka.com/ This program is an alternative to Movie Maker and other audio/video editing software. This program is free and offers just as many, if not more feature than Movie Maker. It is great for creating animations which can be useful for the classroom. It is quite in depth so it is recommended for advanced editors.
2.Photobucket: http://s147.photobucket.com/ Photobucket is a great tool for your students to use as it is a storage place for all of your students pictures. This will help your students stay organized and not lose any important photos they need for a project or assignment. It also has links for social media postings and their profiles can be set as private.
3.Timeleft: http://www.timeleft.info/ Timeleft is an awesome way to make sure your students, or yourself, complete tasks on time. It offers countdowns that can be embedded in your website or on your background so that you will always see the count down. This is beneficial to students who need constant reminders when an assignment is due. It also has an option for sticky notes on your computer that can be placed anywhere to remind you of important topics.
4.WriteMonkey: http://writemonkey.com/ This program allows for distraction-free writing. It lets the user go full screen so they cannot see anything but what they are working on. I personally would love this program as I always become distracted easily. This can be used when students who have a hard time focusing need to write for a long period of time. Even the task bar is barley visible!
Use in an educational setting: This could be used in the same way any other photo editing program would be in a classroom. To create a more exciting presentation and introduce students to new ways of using photos and technology.
Opinion? There are many free photo editing software, others that are in all honesty better than this one. However, it always good to have a variety of different choices. One activity that could be done for middle school and up could be to have students compare contrast a few different free photo editing programs.
Link: Dropbox https://www.dropbox.com/
What it does: This software allows users to upload their files to a dropbox, which sends the files up to a cloud. They can then be retrieved from any device.
Use in an educational setting: We all students are not always the most organized people; especially when it comes to younger students. If we can at least get them to save everything to once spot (dropbox), they can find it later very easily and they can also access it from a tablet or smart phone.
Opinion? I am not really the hugest fan of clouds, but at the same token if they are documents, at least we know it will be there (or at least we hope it will be there). I think this is a helpful guide to introducing students to the beginning of organization skills.
Use in an educational setting: One way to communicate with students is through email. While younger students may not have an email for awhile, the parents will. There are plenty of different email applications that are free, but one way to use this one is to dedicate it solely for communication to parents and guardians.
Opinion? Again, like I said there are plenty of different sites that offer free email accounts, this is just another one. I know I have multiple emails with different accounts. This could be a good one to use to show older students how to go about creating their own email account.
Link: Pidgin https://pidgin.im/
What it does: This software allows users to instant message anyone through any IM system such as AIM, Yahoo, Google Talk, and so on.
Use in an educational setting: Instead of emails, you may wish to communicate through instant messaging. Some students may not have any of the above mentioned resources, so Pidgin allows them to connect to anyone of those.
Opinion? I think this is a really cool idea because the user is able to reach anyone with any type of IM source. It gives the user more variety and more chances to connect.
Homework Simplified http://www.homeworksimplified.com/index.jhtml?partner=^AGL^xdm072&pkw=tutoring%20website&gclid=CJWxrd3OsMgCFQsXHwodczEHqA This software provides access to extra help in all subject areas. There are printable free worksheets. This could be useful as a student if they know they need help they can take the initiative and do some extra work. They could take it home and do some for homework. This is also helpful for teachers, if you were to print some extra worksheets out to keep in the classroom and assign them as extra help for students when need be it could be extremely useful.
Sheppard Software http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/web_games_vocab.htm This software is a free and lets your students play fun games to learn new material. It also will help them remember the old material by reviewing it with games. What I really like about this website is that you can choose different grade levels and different subjects. This is a great tool because games make learning fun and will keep the students interested and actually want to play and learn.
Teachers Pay Teachers https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Browse/Price-Range/Free-Downloads These downloads are great resources for the classroom. You are able to pick from different grades and different types of activities. They have printable to help keep your kids organized with their schedules. They also have games for students to play for different subject areas. Students are able to create their own reader responses and story maps. Visually, I think that the students would really get involved.
Unique Teaching Resources http://www.uniqueteachingresources.com/Free-Bulletin-Board-Display-Banners.html This site has a bulletin board that you are able to download. This is a great way to start the day off when the students first come in and they have a do now. This visually will catch their eye. This is also good for posting homework for your students to see if they were to miss class. It’s also good for the students to create their own whether it be with reminders or for a project.
